FAQs

1. Is a barbell pad good for squats?
A barbell pad can make the bar more comfortable on the upper back, but it is not necessary for everyone. A thick pad can change the bar’s position and balance, so proper bar placement and squat technique should come first.

2. Where should I place a bar pad for squats?
If you choose to use a bar pad, position it evenly around the section of the bar that rests across your upper back. Make sure the pad is securely closed and does not shift before starting your set.

3. Can a weightlifting bar pad be used for other exercises?
Yes. Depending on the design, a weightlifting bar pad can also be used for exercises such as lunges, split squats, and hip thrusts where cushioning between the bar and your body is useful.

4. Does a bar pad change squat form?
It can. Adding padding increases the distance between the bar and your body, which may change the bar’s position and center of gravity. This is why some lifters prefer to squat without a pad, particularly when lifting heavier weights.

5. Why does the barbell hurt my back when I squat?
Some discomfort can come from unfamiliarity with the bar, bar placement, or insufficient upper-back positioning. A bar pad may provide additional cushioning, but it should not be used as a substitute for learning proper squat technique and positioning.
